My radio career began in the fall of 1964 when I arrived
on the campus of Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA.
I barely got my bags unpacked when I paid a visit to WCHC,
the campus radio station. And, before I knew it, I was
spending so much time as a disc jockey and news writer/reporter,
it seemed like I was majoring in "radio" and
minoring in academics at "The Cross". As you
might imagine, my grades reflected it! During my junior
and senior years, I also worked weekends in news and as
a disc jockey at WNEB, the CBS radio affiliate in Worcester
at the time.
After graduation in 1968, radio took a back seat in my
life as I spent the next fifteen years first in retail
operations, and then in the computer software industry.
It wasn't until 1984 when radio again entered my life.
After seeing an article in a local newspaper about the
Talking Information Center, a radio reading service for
the blind and visually impaired based in Marshfield. I
called to ask the station manager if he could use any
weekend help. At the time, TIC was located in a storefront
in downtown Marshfield, MA.
He said Yes. I said Great.
In 1987, WATD's owner, Ed Perry, built a state-of-the-art
broadcast facility on Enterprise Drive in Marshfield,
less than a mile away from his station's old home. The
new building also became the new home to TIC. Interestingly
enough, TIC moved in and began broadcasting months before
the WATD staff arrived.
Shortly after WATD began broadcasting in its new building,
Ed Perry and I ran into each other one Sunday afternoon.
He asked if I might be interested in doing some part time
work on his station.
I said Yes. He said Great.
Well, to make a long story short, in 1988 my full-time
day job evaporated altogether during a corporate takeover
and I wound up becoming a full-time employee at WATD in
news, sales and even as a fill-in disc jockey. And, I've
been making the daily trek from Canton to Marshfield since
then often at the ungodly hour of 3:30 AM
But, as anyone who, like me, has been bitten by the radio
"bug" will attest: "radio is the most fun
you can have...with your clothes on!
