Marshfield High School Massacre Plot Suspect on Trial
|
A second suspect is being tried in an alleged plot to attack Marshfield High School, after choosing to have a trial heard by a judge instead of a jury. Joseph Nee is charged with plotting to launch the Columbine-style attack. Police say Nee and another student talked about shooting those who were mean to them. The bench trial began today in Brockton Superior Court with opening statements and witness testimony. Nee, whose father heads the Boston Police Patrolmen's Association, is charged with planning to set off bombs and shoot students, teachers, police officers and firefighters. Another former student, Tobin Kerns, is serving a 10-month prison sentence after being convicted of conspiracy to commit murder.

Duxbury Approves Extra Cash for Schools

Duxbury’s Board of Selectmen approved School Superintendent Sue Skeiber’s request for a 250,000 dollar capital exclusion for the 2008 fiscal year. The Superintendent estimated that the schools are still short approximately 595,000 dollars, and apart from the capital exclusion the school board is also asking for 611,400 dollars to be provided under Article 7. The question of whether taxpayers will allow the override of proposition 2 ˝ in order to pass the article, which is currently totals 911,400 dollars in capital exclusion items, will be up for debate at town meeting on March 8.

Duxbury's One Million Dollar Building Idea

The Duxbury Board of Selectmen have recommended a capital request, for one million dollars, for a design plan to build a new fire and police station. The costs include architectural fees and planning specs, but no actual construction. To fund the project, the Board recommended adding a question to the ballot on March 22 that will call for a debt exclusion and an override of proposition 2 ˝. There will be further presentations and discussions about the project at the annual town meeting on March 8.

Life Science Research

Governor Deval Patrick has launched a $12 million grant program to help spark life science research in Massachusetts. The grants seek to encourage industry-sponsored research, attract and keep nationally known faculty at Massachusetts' colleges and help fund the research of new investigators working on life sciences. The initiative was launched today at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Two Brothers Killed in Halifax Crash

Two brothers from Plympton are dead after the car they were in smashed into a tree in Halifax last night. Police said 32-year-old Michael McMorrow was driving a 1997 Ford Mustang when it hit the tree on Route 58 around 11:30 Monday night. He and his brother, 25-year-old Steven McMorrow, were pronounced dead at the scene. A backseat passenger, 24-year-old Marcus Borsari of Plympton, was taken to Brockton Hospital in serious condition.

BC Wins the Beanpot

Boston College beat Harvard 6-5 in overtime last night for the Beanpot championship. Nick Petrecki scored his second goal of the game - and the second of his college career - seven minutes into the extra period for the win. BC led 5-3 before Jon Pelle and Mike Taylor scored to send the game into overtime. Boston University beat Northeastern 5-4 earlier in the consolation game.
