Norwell: Incumbent selectman Merritt ousted by Advisory Board Chairman

Voters turned out in Norwell on Saturday to elect a new member to the board of selectmen.

Advisory Board Chairman Ellen Allen beat out incumbent Richard Merritt 1,450 votes to 735 in the town’s only contested race.

Allen said she’s excited and never guessed she would win by such a wide margin. She was sworn-in at Town Hall surrounded by family members.

30 percent of Norwell’s 7,200 registered voters cast ballots.

Allen said she had been out holding campaign signs since 7:30 Saturday morning, and that she’s very pleased by the town’s show of support.

As for the advisory board, Allen expects a vote at their next meeting on a new chairman to step in as she makes the move to her new job.
