Braintree: Police say shoplifter attempted to swallow cocaine during arrest

Braintree Police attempted to arrest a Providence, RI man late last week for stealing about $60 worth of clothing from Macy’s at the South Shore Plaza, when they found he was involved in more serious criminal activity–cocaine trafficking.

Braintree Police say 31-year-old Samil Rivera became combative with loss prevention officers who tried to detain him after they watched Rivera try on a sports jacket, then conceal a shirt underneath it and try to leave the store.

Police say Rivera then attempted to swallow price tags and a substance they believed to be narcotics. Fifteen grams of cocaine were later removed from his mouth.

Rivera was placed under arrest and charged with trafficking in cocaine and shoplifting. Rivera was held over the weekend without bail because police questioned his true identity.
