Marshfield: Sports show recognizes local man battling cancer

40-year-old Shawn Osborne, a NASCAR fan and Whitman native, was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of lung cancer and began treatment earlier this year. Wednesday night, members of the local television show “The Sports Page with Joe O’Neill” on Marshfield Community Access recognized Shawn, and surprised him with a piece of NASCAR Memorabilia from one of his favorite drivers.

The gift: a helmet, worn and autographed by NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick. Shawn says Harvick is his favorite driver.

Harvick, a native of Bakersfield, California, drives the # 29 Budweiser Chevrolet and is running 4th in NASCAR points. He finished 5th this past week at Talladega Super speedway.

Shawn was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of lung cancer after he went to the doctor thinking he had pneumonia. Co-host Keith Hayes said Osborne is a good friend, and the show’s crew also passed along their thoughts and prayers.

This Saturday at 7 p.m. a benefit is being held at the Abington VFW for Shawn. All the proceeds from the fundraiser will go to Shawn, who has been out of work since he started treatment in February.
