Hingham: Man charged in December bank robbery

John S. Balonis is charged with armed robbery and larceny

A lengthy investigation has resulted in an arrest warrant for a suspect in a December 2010 bank robbery of a Citizens Bank in Stop & Shop on Route 3A, in Hingham.

50-year-old John Balonis, formerly of Quincy and currently serving a sentence at the Norfolk House of Correction in Dedham on a seperate charge, will be arraigned on charges including armed robbery within the next several weeks.

Police say at 6:45 p.m. on December 2 of last year Balonis walked up to the teller, handed her a note which said “do not call 911” and asked for large bills. Although he said he had a weapon, none was shown. Balonis took money from two tellers and told them, “everything will be ok, now count to 100”, and then he left.

The investigation was led by Hingham Detective Robert Mansfield, with with assistance from detectives from Weymouth, Cohasset, Plymouth and Norfolk Sheriff’s offices and State Police.
