Duxbury: Selectmen reinstate open forum policy

Duxbury selectmen unanimously voted to bring back the open forum item on their weekly agenda at their meeting Monday night.

Selectmen discontinued the open forum after Town Counsel Robert Troy determined it was a violation of the state’s new open meeting law. However, Selectman Chair Shawn Dahlen says Troy has now changed his mind.

“Since his original four page memo, stating that he thought it was in the best interest of the town to not have open forum, he has changed his opinion and said as long as selectmen make it very clear during open forum that all we can do is listen and bring it up for future consideration, then we will have complied with the requirements of the open meeting law,” said Dahlen.

However, Dahlen still suggests that if anyone would like to raise an issue before the board, they should call the selectmen or the town manager and have it placed it as an agenda item for discussion.

Dahlen said, “I would still urge people to call or talk to somebody in advance and actually be put on the agenda, so we can have a more intelligent discussion.”
