Authorities mounting a massive air-and-sea search for a missing boater off the coast of Marshfield are still trying to piece together what happened, as the Coast Guard confirms for WATD that alcohol was a factor in the incident.

Coast Guard Lt. Joe Klinker says the Marshfield harbormaster notified them around 8:30 p.m. Saturday of a report of a person in the water near Beetle Rock.

A kayaker reportedly rescued a man who had jumped from his vessel to help a friend who had fallen overboard.

The first individual is reportedly a bit shaken up, but otherwise unhurt.

No names have been released.

Searchers have located a backpack the missing boater was wearing, and are focusing their efforts in that area.

Lt. Klinker says, as of Sunday afternoon, the operation remains classified as a search and rescue.

Authorities from Scituate, Duxbury, Hull, Hanson, and Hingham are assisting those from Marshfield, the State Police and the Coast Guard.
