Red Sox: Sox win 5 – 2 over the Phillies

Jon Lester tossed two-hit ball over seven shutout innings to lead the Boston Red Sox over the Philadelphia Phillies 5 – 2 yesterday. Jason Varitek homered twice and the Sox avoided a three-game sweep. The Phillies got a scare when lefty Cole Hamels was forced to leave after being struck on the glove hand by Adrian Gonzalez’s liner. The Phillies say X-rays were negative.

The Red Sox designated outfielder Mike Cameron for assignment and recalled infielder Yamaico Navarro from Triple-A Pawtucket. Navarro was active for yesterday’s game against the Phillies. Also, Kevin Youkilis was out of the line up with a sore left foot.
