About 50 people turned out to support 18 year old U-Mass Boston sophomore and Braintree School Committee Candidate Shaza Alzaim, at her kickoff campaign at the Elks Lodge Thursday night.

Alziam grew up in Braintree and attended the public schools there.

She said she can bring a unique perspective and also has experience in regards to the school committee and school budgets.

“During my senior year at Braintree High, I was a student representative on the school committee, which gave me a great knowledge of the budget and how the system worked. I then went on to campaign work with Joe Driscoll. I also worked with the Massachusetts Woman’s Political Caucus. With that, I was also able to work with both the local and state level budgets,” Alzaim said.

Former State Representative Joe Driscoll was also on hand at the event, to lend his support.

Driscoll praised Alzaim and said, “When she told me she wanted to run for school committee, we sat down and talked about it. She talked to me about the issues. She knows about school contracts with the teachers, the budget, the Building Authority; she knows about all of these things. These are the things she wants to work on. It’s not about getting elected – it’s about doing the job.”

Braintree Mayor Joe Sullivan also attended the event.
