South Shore: Businesses already hiring holiday workers

Despite the down economy and a jobless rate still above nine-percent, South Shore businesses are already hiring a wave of holiday workers that could give payrolls a much-needed boost.

The South Coastal Career Center in Quincy is planning a job fair in conjunction with South Shore Plaza in Braintree next month, and organizers say things are picking up compared to previous years.

They say it took less than a day to get 25 local companies to agree to take part in the upcoming event.

Job postings in Greater Boston have doubled since this time last year.

Employers actively recruiting workers locally include Macy’s, Dollar Tree and Michaels.

Restaurant chains are also planning to boost staff levels for the holidays.

Opportunities also are available at FedEx and U.P.S.
