A serious crash early Saturday morning on Rte. 58 in Hanson has killed the son of a veteran police officer in that town.

The accident happened less than one mile from the victim’s Rosewood Dr. home, near the intersections of Rtes. 58 and 27.

Police say a pickup truck driven by 24-year-old Colby McCarthy was headed south on Rte. 58 when it crossed the center line and collided with a utility pole, causing it to snap.

The crash remains under investigation, but police say the fact that there are no road marks, skids, or debris leads them to believe McCarthy gradually drifted into the oncoming lane.

McCarthy, a 2005 graduate of Whitman-Hanson Regional High School, was the son of Hanson police officer Kevin McCarthy.
