Middleboro: DPW worker stuck by car while collecting trash

A Middleboro DPW worker has been hospitalized after being struck by a car while collected garbage Thursday morning.

The victim has been identified as 39-year-old DPW worker Michael O’Brien, from Middleboro.

Middleboro Police Sgt. Benjamin Mackiewicz says they got a call around 10:48 a.m. Thursday.

O’Brien was being driven by another DPW employee on a trash collecting route. Sgt. Mackiewicz says an initial investigation indicates that a vehicle was travelling North on Plymouth street, when O’Brien ran across the road from behind the trash vehicle and was hit by the car, driven by 59-year-old Paula St. Germaine, also a Middleboro resident.

O’Brien was taken to South Shore Hospital with three broken ribs and facial injuries.

The incident is under investigation by Middleboro police and the State Police Reconstruction team. No charges had been filed as of Thursday evening.
