A Hingham woman will be in court on charges of bilking approximately $10,000 from an elderly woman in a psychic reading scam.

The incident began after the victim, a 69 year old Pembroke woman, made several visits to a psychic and card reading business at 49 Whiting St.

Police say, during these visits, the so-called psychic, 24-year-old Tiffany Crystal Smith, elicited information about the victim and her family members.

On the last visit, Smith allegedly told the victim there was a “curse and a black cloud” over her and it in order to lift it, she would need to pay $16,000.

The victim was further told if that if she didn’t pay the money, a specific relative would commit suicide.

She was also told to bring back a piece of jewelry.

The victim returned and gave Smith an antique $500 ring and a check for $7,000, which was cashed immediately.

The “psychic” told the victim to sell personal items, borrow the money, or bring a credit card to pay the additional $9,000, but the victim was unable to pay the additional money.

She then told her family who immediately contacted Hingham police.

Smith was arrested at the Whiting St. business, which is also her home, on Saturday.

She is charged with larceny and conspiracy, and will appear in Hingham District Court on Tuesday.

Police suspect there may be other self-described psychics working the same scam, and will be pursuing those leads.
