Middleboro: Public hearing to focus on proposed fines for swearing, drug use

On Monday, Middleboro residents will get to sound off at a public meeting about proposed get-tough ordinances that will be decided at Town Meeting in June.

One would fine people $300 for smoking marijuana in public.

A $50 fine would be imposed for residents shoveling snow into the street.

Swearing loud enough for others to hear would cost $20.

Some Middleboro residents think the proposed fines are a good idea, while others think they go too far.

The police chief thinks the local marijuana fine would be more effective than the current Massachusetts fine of $100, because unlike the state fine, there are repercussions for local violators who don’t pay.

The state has approved the proposed ticket system.

If Town Meeting approves it, it will become law in Middleboro.
