Red Sox: Rays beat Sox 2-1

The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Red Sox 2-1 last night, snapping Boston’s five-game winning streak. Tampa Bay second baseman Will Rhymes left in the eighth inning after being hit by a pitch near his right elbow. While standing at first base, he collapsed into the arms of first base coach George Hendrick. The Rays say fainted, but he’s fine. He wasn’t taken to a hospital.

Red Sox closer Andrew Bailey is set to resume throwing next week. The club says a surgeon evaluated him earlier this week. The right-hander has been out all season after having surgery on a torn thumb ligament.

Kevin Youkilis started a rehab assignment last night as the designated hitter for Triple-A Pawtucket. The Sox say he could play in the field tomorrow. Meanwhile, Daisuke Matsuzaka is set to start for Pawtucket today. Sox manager Bobby Valentine says he doesn’t believe Matsuzaka is close to pitching in the majors.
