Whitman: Missing man found face-down in muddy woods

Whitman police say that after an extensive overnight search, they found a missing man in the woods early Friday morning.

Police say that at around 10:30 p.m. Thursday a Washington Street resident was reported missing by family members, who said he was suffering from mental health issues and they believed he had gone into the woods behind their home.

Police set up a perimeter and brought in Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department canines, and a search and rescue team. Police say that around 4:30 a.m. Friday, after hours of searching through thick brush and waist-deep water, the team found the man lying face-down in six inches of mud and water and suffering from Stage 2 hypothermia.

The man was treated by Whitman Fire and Rescue and taken to an area hospital. His condition was not released.
