Marshfield Municipal Airport has received a $1.6 million federal grant to prepare the facility for next year’s runway lengthening and widening project.
Airport officials said the prep work is scheduled to begin around Labor Day, and will include tree and brush clearing at runway approaches, and creating a new natural habitat for endangered species to mitigate the environmental impact of the construction.
The grant covers the vast majority of the cost of preparation, with the rest coming from the state and the airport.
300 feet of runway will be added to meet F.A.A. requirements.
The expansion is expected to cost approximately $12 million.
