John Hornstra, owner of Hornstra Farm, gave Governor Deval Patrick and the state’s Agricultural Commissioner, Greg Watson, a tour of his 77-acre farm in Norwell Tuesday morning, explaining to the pair how his dairy production operates and how the property’s maintained.
Governor Patrick noted that Massachusetts has 155 dairy farms which produce about 245 million pounds of milk, “The dairy industry sales in Massachusetts are $43-44 million a year. The contribution to our economy is upwards of $150 million a year. There are lots of jobs.”
As part of the Governor’s recognition of agriculture, he proclaimed June as ‘Dairy Month’ and urged residents to visit local farms.
“I encourage everybody to pay attention to our agriculture generally here in the Commonwealth but dairy farming this month in particular,” said Governor Patrick
Norwell was just the kick-off location of June dairy celebrations. Several towns across the state are also hosting events including Lincoln, Sutton, and Dracut.
