Authorities are investigating the death of a prisoner at the Old Colony Correctional Center in Bridgewater.
The state Department of Corrections confirmed for WATD that 49-year-old Robert Gigilo of Malden was found hanging in his cell late Wednesday afternoon.
He was pronounced dead a short time later at Morton Hospital in Taunton.
Giglio, convicted in 2009, was serving a 15-to-20-year sentence for child rape and assault.
He was the first person convicted under Jessica’s Law, which created the aggravated child rape statute, which is punishable by a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in State Prison.
It also changed triggering offenses and increased penalties for subsequent offense of indecent assault and battery to a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison.
The Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office and the state Department of Correction are investigating Giglio’s death.
