Hingham: Old-style baseball

With the Yankees at Fenway this week, here’s an excerpt from an 1888 book about baseball by John Montgomery Ward of the New York Base-ball club. “Whoever has not experienced the pleasure of taking a young woman to her first game of ball should seize the first opportunity to do so. Her remarks about plays and the questions she will ask are all too funny to be missed.”

Well Hingham Historical Society Executive Director Suzanne Buchanan sees an opportunity to present 1880s baseball in a way to teach men and women, young and old, how to appreciate the beginnings of the game, and raise some funds at the same time. The society presented its annual vintage baseball game Saturday.

The Coopers played the Derbys in old-style baseball.

The Hingham Historical Society raises about $6,000 from the game while presenting history to the public.
