South Shore: MBTA cutting weekend Greenbush, Kingston-Plymouth service

Commuter trains on the Greenbush and Kingston-Plymouth lines will stop running on Saturdays and Sundays, starting next week-end.

The MBTA says it’s grave financial situation means restoring weekend service on the Old Colony lines isn’t likely anytime soon.

The move will affect thousands of people who rely on the service to get them south of Boston, and South Shore residents will no longer have the option of hopping on a train to get into the city.

Chamber of Commerce officials said ending the weekend service could affect South Shore tourism this summer.

As of Sunday, the MBTA instituted an average 23-percent rate hike, in an effort to close an anticipated $160 million deficit.

Weekend commuter ferry service between Quincy and Logan Airport is slated to be cut in October.
