The Vice Mayor of Shichigahama welcomed Plymouth town officials at a reception the Hampton Inn on Saturday night.
Vice Mayor Masami Taira, representing Shichigahama Mayor Yoshio Watanabe, told town officials that they are on the way to recovery and expressed his thanks. His remarks were interpreted by Marti McElreath, Shichigahama’s International Relations Coordinator:
“We are truly happy that–and honored that Plymouth both sent us financial support and also just emotional support as our sister city and as our friends.”
A Power Point presentation showed the devastating impact of the earthquake and tsunami. One third of the town was flooded and almost three thousand homes were damaged, over 600 of them totally destroyed. Selectman Chairman Matt Muratore:
“…very moving, very emotional to see, particularly for all of us who actually went there two years ago, and I think it will be an emotional meeting on Tuesday night as well to hear this.”
And that’s when the Board of Selectmen will officially welcome the 12-member Shichigama delegation. The meeting begins at 6 p.m.
