Massachusetts: Mobile ticketing experiment begins on Mass. trains

The MBTA is set to launch a pilot program that will allow commuter rail passengers to purchase and display their tickets on smart phones.
Officials say a select group of about 80 customers will test the mobile app starting on Monday on the Kingston/Plymouth, Middleborough/Lakeville and Greenbush commuter lines.
The app, which allows riders to display tickets on their screens when they board trains, is expected to fully launch later this fall. It will be available to iPhone, Android and Blackberry users.
The T hopes mobile ticketing will eliminate the need for additional vending machines at stations and save money by reducing cash handling costs.
