A man has died after he and a child were struck by a pickup truck on a busy road in Whitman on Sunday afternoon.
The girl was on a bicycle with training wheels when she and the man were hit on Temple St./Rte. 27. Crews removed the bike from underneath the truck during the investigation.
Whitman Fire Chief Tim Grenno told WATD the accident took place across the street from his home.
He said the girl was flown to Boston Medical Center in stable condition, and the man was pronounced dead at Brockton Hospital.
There is not a cross-walk in the area where the pair were apparently crossing the road. Deputy Police Chief Tim Hanlon said why they were in the roadway in that area is still under investigation.
The driver of the truck was not hurt.
The man who died has been identified as 38 year-old Edward Cordwell, Jr., of Whitman.
Police are investigating, and the road remained shut down as of mid-afternoon.
(WATD’s Steven Dodrill and Garo Hagopian both contributed to this report)
