Quincy: Randolph man charged with injuring infant son

A Randolph man accused of injuring his 4-month-old son so severely that the infant may be blind has been ordered held on $10,000 bail after pleading not guilty to charges of assault and battery on a child.

Prosecutors said at 25-year-old Jaheel Robinson’s arraignment Monday that the child’s injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

A prosecutor said the boy has two brain hemorrhages, is “neurologically compromised,” and his retinas have been separated, which could lead to permanent blindness. The infant remains in Boston Children’s Hospital where his survival remains in doubt.

Robinson told police that the baby had fallen on the stairs after Robinson’s knee gave up from an old football injury while he was carrying the child.

State child welfare authorities have taken custody of the child.
