Braintree: Man hospitalized after standoff with police

A Braintree man was hospitalized after a brief standoff and struggle with police on Wednesday.

Police say they went to the Arborway home of the 65-year-old man, after a 9-year-old boy reported being approached and frightened by him on Tuesday.

Police spoke with the man, who refused to come outside, through an open window. The man made threats toward police, and neighbors said it sounded like the man was tearing up his house and barricading the doors with furniture. They also said the man may have a firearm, and gave police info on his medical history: a doctor later ordered a medical evaluation.

A SWAT team was called in and the man eventually came out–brandishing a large pole at police. He was taken into custody after a brief struggle and transported to Quincy Medical Center for evaluation. He has not been charged with any crime at this time.
