It seems that Norwell is quite a sports town.
A new study says the community is overusing its athletic fields.
The town-commissioned report says as many as eight new facilities are needed to handle all the sports activity.
It finds that the town’s 21 sports fields are hosting far more practices and games than they’re expected to handle.
The study recommends installing synthetic turf fields in future projects because they require less maintenance and can support more activity, but some officials want to know whether the artificial material poses any environmental or health risks.
The report comes as Norwell moves closer to its first opportunity to use community preservation funds to over-haul its recreation facilities.
The committee that oversees the $6 million fund has been sent a proposal for two new synthetic fields at Norwell High School.
