Scituate: Reidy Foundation donates financial gift for high school varsity field lighting

Scituate Selectmen accepted a financial gift Tuesday night to fund the installation of six light poles to illuminate the Scituate High School Varsity Baseball Field.

Scituate Little League President Dan Fennelly said the proposal to light up the field will be funded with a generous $200,000 gift, raised by the Reidy Foundation.

“What we’re proposing is to install college level lighting at the varsity field at the high school. It’s a gift from the John D. Reidy Jr. Memorial Foundation and they’ve been working on this for about 8 years and raised about $200,000 to get this completed”.

The next step is to meet with the Scituate School Committee and with abutters to address any concerns that they might have with the lighting proposal.

“We have a plan that we presented tonight to have a meeting with the abutters and make it an event to come in to address any concerns that they might have with the lighting that’s going up there”, Fennelly said.

They said there’s even a possibility they might be able to light up the football practice field too, if the funding can be stretched far enough.

They hope to have the lights up and running by next spring.

The proponents are suggesting that the town charge a fee to use the lights, which are estimated at about $4,000 a year in electrical costs.

They have also proposed to name the field The John D. Reidy Jr. Varsity Field.
