Tim White and Jeff Welch were listed on the agenda at the County Commissioners’ recent meeting as “interviews” —Welch for the position of Assistant Treasurer and White as Assistant Register of Deeds. But, it was really just a courtesy call, because by state statute both Treasurer Tom O’Brien and Register of Deeds John Buckley can simply make these appointments.
Attorney Tim White, the new Assistant Register replaces Mike Holden who left recently to practice law full time. White’s law firm is in Weymouth. He has run unsuccessfully in several Democratic primaries, including for state rep, state senate and county commissioner. White also ran for district attorney in the 2002 general election against Tim Cruz, who won. The salary range for White’s new full time position is $90,000 a year.
Jeff Welch, the new Assistant Treasurer replaces Dennis Gallagher, who now works for the County Retirement Board. Welch is a former County Commissioner. His work experience has been as a real estate title examiner. But, does he have any background in finance or accounting? Treasurer Tom O’Brien:
“You heard from the Commissioners what a great candidate he is. He received a unanimous endorsement as a deputy treasurer. I know he will do a great job dealing with those responsibilities.”
But, does he have actual experience or any background in accounting or finance?
“Again, as you saw we have a separate component of that, there’s separate deputy that down the road will be dealing with those issues.”
Assistant Treasurer is a full-time position and the salary range is $60,000 a year.
