Scituate: Committee selects Gates Middle School reuse designs

The Scituate Public Building Committee has wrapped up their study of several architectural schemes for the reuse of the Gates Middle School as a new town hall.

The committee went over four different architectural schemes for the Gates School reuse plan, which includes a new town hall, senior center and community center. They then whittled it down to three plans to recommend to the board of selectmen, which will then pick two for schematic design and cost estimates.

Public Building Committee Chairman Ed DiSalvio said, “The architects under contract to complete a schematic design study and to develop two schemes and cost estimates. We reviewed the four different schemes and selected the three that we thought were appropriated schemes to have cost estimates done on.”

DiSalvio said the one scheme they didn’t choose, scheme C, was just too small to accommodate a new town hall.

“The architect on scheme C was removing a number of the wings on the existing Gates School, so it became too small to support a town hall.”
