Hingham: Police find bottle of vodka between child seats in Boston man’s vehicle

Hingham police say 39-year-old Jonathan Barrett was driving drunk when he allegedly struck an unoccupied taxi on Shipyard Drive over the weekend and then took off.

When he was later pulled over by police on Route-3A in Hingham, officers discovered three of Barrett’s children were in his Toyota Land Cruiser. The children are between the ages of one and two-years-old.

As officers approached the South Boston man’s vehicle, he had trouble working the controls to lower his car window and when he eventually exited his vehicle he was unsteady on his feet—with a Hingham officer, at one point, having to step in so he didn’t stumble into traffic.

A half-empty bottle of vodka was found in between two child safety car seats and was recovered as evidence.

Barrett is facing a slew of charges including three counts of operating under the influence with child endangerment, driving to endanger, and driving with an open container of alcohol.

A Hingham officer waited for a nearby relative to pick up the children before the scene was cleared.
