Cohasset: Car drives into water off Government Island

Two people escaped serious injury after driving into the waters off Cohasset Thursday morning.

Cohasset Acting Police Chief Bill Quigley says they got at around 1:10 a.m. Thursday for a vehicle in the water off Government Island, off of Border Street. When they arrived they found the driver, a 24-year-old Quincy man and his passenger, a young woman, soaking wet.

Chief Quigley says the two appeared to be possibly suffering some symptoms of hypothermia, but were not seriously injured and were taken to South Shore Hospital. The car was lifted out of the water at low tide with a crane, at around 5:30 a.m.

Chief Quigley says the pair said they had been driving around Cohasset’s Government Island when they lost their bearings and drove the 1996 BMW into about 15 feet of water.

“This is a first for me down here,” said Chief Quigley. “Just pay attention to what you’re doing.”

Quigley says he does not expect any charges will be filed.
