Cohasset: Town Meeting to vote on the budget and a meal and hotel tax proposal

Tonight is Cohasset’s annual town meeting, and while the warrant has just 19 articles, a number of them are expected to generate considerable debate and discussion.

Voters will decide whether to adopt a local-option meal and hotel tax. The meal tax would add a 0.75 percent tax to restaurant, catered and prepared meals.

The hotel tax would be a six percent excise tax on hotel and motel stays in town. If either of these is approved, the tax would go into effect on July first.

The money raised would be used to maintain town facilities and to operate the town’s proposed senior center.

The selectmen’s proposed 2014 fiscal year budget is $35.7 million, $1.1 million more than the current year’s budget

Also on the warrant is an article that would change the Town Manager Act. Last December, voters rejected an amendment to the Town Manager Act at Special Town meeting.

There is also an article to amend the zoning bylaw to impose a temporary moratorium on medical marijuana treatment centers.

The town meeting is at 6:30 p.m.  in the gymnasium at Cohasset High School.

About David Skill

Dave Skill’s radio career began in the fall of 1964 when he arrived on the campus of Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA. Dave barely got his bags unpacked when he paid a visit to WCHC, the campus radio station. And, before he knew it, he was spending so much time as a disc jockey and news writer/reporter, it seemed like he was majoring in “radio” and minoring in academics at “The Cross”. As you might imagine, his grades reflected it! During his junior and senior years, he also worked weekends in news and as a disc jockey at WNEB, the CBS radio affiliate in Worcester at the time...
