Quincy: Proposed ban on billboards near MBTA tracks

A bill on Beacon Hill would would ban billboards near train tracks between MBTA stations in Quincy.

State senator John Keenan of Quincy, the measure’s sponsor, says allowing them would be a blight on neighborhoods.

He says though there are currently no billboards near tracks in Quincy, the MBTA has recently been exploring advertisement opportunities to generate revenue.

The Senate’s transportation bill would allow companies to buy naming rights to public transit stations.

Keenan says his legislation is preemptive, meaning it would keep the large signs from being put up even if the transportation measure allows it.
