Brockton: Veteran school official steps down amid allegations

A Brockton school official has quit his job amid ethics allegations.

George Bezreh, who had been Facilities Director for more than ten years, is accused of funneling approximately $1.5 million in construction contracts to friends and business associates.

An investigation began two years ago, following a tip about the Brockton school district’s electrical maintenance contract.

The tipster said invoices did not include the number of hours of labor, materials purchased and certified payrolls, as required.

A report from the state Inspector General said many of the bills were too high for the work performed, and that Bezreh had an outside relationship with one of the electrical company’s owners.

The report also said Bezreh awarded two no-bid contracts worth a combined $1 million to a roofing company that had recently hired him to perform private work as an electrician.

It remained unclear whether Bezreh will face any criminal charges.
