Whitman: Town Meeting to vote on two budgets; one would lead to major cuts, the other could lead to a Prop. 2 1/2 override

Whitman residents will have a difficult decision to make this evening, as they head to town meeting to vote on two possible budget scenarios. Town meeting will be asked to vote for one of two budgets for the new fiscal year. The particular article, Article 2 is expected to be taken out of order to discuss at the start of the meeting.

Officials have decided to present two budget, after the town received an assessment increase of 6% from the school district. One budget for FY 2014 would be for $24.7 million and the amount of the school district assessment would be under the levy limit. One draw back to the budget would be nearly $400,000 in cuts to a number of town departments. The second budget would be for $25.2 million with 3% of the school assessment being placed under the levy limit. The additional 3% would be subject to a Proposition 2 1/2 override

If town meeting approves the budget that requires an override, then the Board of Selectmen would have to call for an election and set a date. Whitman’s Town meeting gets underway at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in the auditorium of Town Hall.
