Judges and politicians filled the session one room in the Hingham courthouse Friday afternoon for the swearing-in of Fran Marini as the first justice of the court.
He then began a defense of the building in which he spoke. When the legislature has looked for savings in the court system, the Hingham courthouse frequently makes the list of potential closures.
Marini said the courts play an essential role in our democracy. He said closing local courthouses may achieve increased efficiency, but at the cost of impaired fairness.
A post-ceremony reception began without the new first justice. The former state representative stood outside the courthouse politicking for its preservation.
