Norwell: Medical marijuana companies roll forward for permits

Norwell’s town administrator updated the board of selectmen Wednesday night regarding applications from companies interested in building medical marijuana facilities.

Norwell has a zoning by –law on the books for the location of medical marijuana manufacturing and dispensaries.

Town Administrator Jim Boudreau said the town has been approached by several companies interested in building medical marijuana facilities.

“We have met with at least four different companies that are looking to open a dispensary, a manufacturing center, or both in the town of Norwell. As you aware of, both of our industrial parks have been zoned for the dispensary and manufacturing of medical marijuana”, Boudreau said.

However, both Norwell’s office parks have daycare centers and abut residential zones.

One office park has a school as well.

Both the state and Norwell’s zoning by-laws restricts medical marijuana facilities to be built 500 feet from these areas.

Even so, Boudreau says there are places where medical marijuana facilities can operate in Norwell.

“We do have some spots. We’ve pointed those out to those companies which are exploring those at this point. We did have a company ask if we would provide them a letter of support for their application. We denied them and said we have too many other companies that are looking at that”.

Preliminary applications are due today, but the second round will be site specific, with companies being required receive a letter of support from the board of selectmen.
