Hanover: State plans to widen portion of Route 53

Representatives from the state Department of Transportation held a public hearing at Hanover town hall Monday night to discuss plans to widen Route 53 from the from the Route 3 ramps in Hanover to Route 123.

There was a light turn out for a public hearing.

Project Manager Brian Chapman said the $1.25 million reconstruction project will help improve safety on that portion of Route 53.

“We’re widening from 2 lanes to 4 lanes, we’re adding sidewalks on both sides and there will be a 4 foot shoulder on each side for bicycles. So there will be improved capacity and improved safety.”

Chapman said the project is expected to begin in the fall of next year.

“The timeline is for the project to be advertised in the spring of 2014, provided everything goes well. The construction would begin in the fall of 2014 and end the following year in 2015.”

No detours or lane closings are expected during construction.
