Middleboro: Police seeking help in hit-and-run death of Michael Dutra

A Code Red call went out Thursday morning to 228,637 phones in Plymouth County seeking information in the hit and run killing of 58-year-old Michael Dutra of Middleboro.

A reward has reached $1,250 from donations to the “Justice for Michael Dutra” fund at YouCaring.com for information leading to the arrest of the driver who killed Dutra on Wood Street in Middleboro on Friday.

John Birtwell, Spokesperson for the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department, said the first Code Red call was sent out to 7,465 Middleboro residents.

Police Chief Bruce Gates said tips have been coming in and he hopes Thursday’s call will lead to an arrest.

Gates said witnesses believe there was a passenger in the Jeep Grand Cherokee that ran down Dutra, who was riding his bicycle back to his home on Rocky Meadow Street. Gates said the passenger could also face charges for withholding information.

Officials says they believe the suspect’s vehicle is Jeep Grand Cherokee, model year 2005 to 2009. They say the suspect SUV probably is missing the front marker lens, has a broken right headlight lens and a damaged right front bumper.

Services for Dutra were held Friday at the Crapo-Hathaway Funeral Home in Taunton.

Anyone with information in the case is urged to call Middleboro police at 508-947-1212 or State Police at 508-947-2222.
