Plymouth: State trooper involved in fatal crash to be arraigned

Authorities say a Massachusetts state trooper involved in an off-duty car crash that resulted in the death of a Carver woman and her daughter is set to face a judge.

John Basler is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Plymouth District Court on charges including drunken driving and improper storage of a firearm.

According to police, the 25-year-old Basler’s blood-alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit to drive in Massachusetts in the early-morning hours of Sept. 22 when his vehicle was involved in a head-on crash in Plymouth with a car driven by 64-year-old Susan Macchi. Macchi and her daughter, 23-year-old Juliet Macchi, died. They were returning home from a Red Sox game.

Basler has been put on unpaid suspension.
