Weymouth: Artillery shell found outside Columbian Square pharmacy

Weymouth detectives are continuing their investigation into an incident involving an artillery shell that happened last night.

Around 7:30 p.m., Weymouth Police dispatch received a 911 call regarding a suspicious looking device near a trash barrel outside a pharmacy on Pleasant Street in Columbian Square.

The Officers who responded determined that the device needed further investigation. A short time later, the Hazardous Device Response Unit from the Massachusetts State Police and FBI arrived on scene. As a precautionary measure all businesses in the area were evacuated and all pedestrian and vehicular traffic was diverted from the area.

Columbian Square was re-opened to the public shortly after 9:00 p.m.,  after the artillery shell was removed.

Detectives are still investigating this incident to try to determine who left the artillery shell there . Anyone with information is asked to call Weymouth Police at 781-335-1212.
