Cohasset: Town department groups proposed to interview town manager candidates

There were some tense moments at the Cohasset Selectmen’s meeting Tuesday night between Selectmen Martha Gjesteby and Steve Gaumer, regarding Gaumer’s proposal to have town departments interview prospective town managers.

The proposal that town department groups interview town manager finalists didn’t sit well with Selectman Martha Gjesteby, who accused Gaumer of delaying the process of selecting a town manager, which is more favorable to Acting Town Manager Mike Milanoski.

“I don’t think that we should have the candidates interviewing with everybody in the town! That’s kind of ridiculous! Obviously, you’re trying to delay the process. That’s what I think,” Gjesteby said.

Gaumer then shot back and said, “I don’t appreciate the accusation Martha. Yeah, you’re right. I spent four hours out of my work day putting this together because I want to delay something? I’m sorry; I ran for this office so that I could represent the town and find some success here. I do believe that we need a process in order to find the most qualified and best fit for this town. If you don’t agree with that approach, then I would appreciate it if you put forward your own process!”

The Collins Center search firm is set to appear before the board next Wednesday, with a list of five finalists for town manager.
