Police and the D.A.’s office have confirmed the arrest of an 18-year-old from Middleboro in connection with the October 11th hit-and-run crash that killed 58-year-old Michael Dutra.
18-year-old Eric Megna, of Middleboro, will be arraigned in Wareham district court Thursday on one charge of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash causing death.
Michael Dutra was struck and killed while he was riding his bicycle on Wood Street on the evening of October 11th, by someone driving a black SUV. The driver did not step forward, but on October 28th police seized a Jeep suspected as the one driven in the hit-and-run.
Prosecutors allege that on October 11th, Megna was returning from U-Mass Dartmouth, when he struck Dutra with his Jeep.
They also allege that rather than stop, he fled to a family home in New Hampshire, where he spent several days, and also reported to New Hampshire police that he had struck a deer, and sent a picture of a dead deer to his mother.
Investigators say the picture was taken from the internet, and that there were also no signs of fur or deer on Megna’s black Jeep Cherokee.
Investigators also have parts of Megna’s vehicle recovered from an auto body shop that they say are consistent with debris left at the crash scene.
The case remains under investigation.
