Quincy: Fire displaces elderly man

An elderly Quincy man needs a place to live after a fire destroyed part of his home Sunday morning.
Deputy Fire Chief Jeffrey Starr told WATD the one-alarm blaze started in the basement of the home at 144 Fayette St. at approximately 8:30 a.m.
The flames traveled up the wall to the first floor, where crews managed to contain the blaze.
Starr said the man, 87-year-old Patrick McCarthy, awoke to the smell of smoke, and managed to get outside unharmed.
The fire caused an estimated $50,000 in damage.
It’s unclear whether the home had working smoke detectors, and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
