Stoneham: South Shore man involved in serious crash

State police say a South Shore man who apparently failed to stop for a red light struck a vehicle driven by a Melrose woman in Stoneham, leaving her with life-threatening injuries.

Troopers who responded to the crash scene on Rte. 28 at approximately 8:15 a.m. on Saturday say several witnesses reported the driver of a pickup truck, identified as 36-year-old Gareth J. Byrne of Weymouth, ran the light and slammed into the car driven by 38-year-old Diane Daniel.

The victim’s car hit a fence adjacent to the road and firefighters had to extricate her from the vehicle.

She was listed in critical condition at Massachusetts General Hospital on Sunday afternoon.

Police continue to investigate.
