Afghanistan: US Marine from Abington killed in combat

(AP) – A U.S. Marine from Abington has died in Afghanistan.

Sgt. Daniel Vasselian served three combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch, who confirmed the death of the 27-year-old Marine.

No official details were released but Vasselian’s family said he was killed Monday in an ambush.

He was the second Marine from Massachusetts to lose his life in Afghanistan in the past two weeks. Nineteen-year-old Lance Cpl. Matthew Rodriguez, of Fairhaven, was killed in combat operations on Dec. 11.

A funeral was held Monday for Rodriguez.

Lynch, in a statement, called Vasselian, a 2004 graduate of Abington High School, an American hero.
