Scituate: Voters approve $12M library renovation/expansion override

The threat of snow didn’t stop nearly 1500 voters in Scituate from hitting the polls to vote in favor, 1059 votes to 415 votes, for a $12 million debt exclusion override to renovate and expand the town library.

Library building steering committee member Marla Minier said she’s very excited about the positive vote.

“I’m thrilled! I’m thrilled! A lot more voters came out then we anticipated. We had a fabulous result – thrilled!”

Minier said the library is badly in need of renovations.

“It needs a new roof, new windows, it’s not handicapped accessible and the bathrooms all need to be redone. Now, the whole lower level is going to be for the children. Where the children’s area currently is will now be a teen center. It’s going to be a Lead Building, which means it’s going to be very energy efficient.”

The override now allows the town to receive a $5 million state grant to help offset the cost of the project.
