A hearse carrying the body of Danny Vasselian traveled from Logan airport in Boston to the Quealy and Son Funeral Home in Abington Tuesday morning. Boston and State Police escorted the hearse south on the highway. Limos full of family members followed. Police and fire personnel joined military veterans on all overpasses and, then, in breakdown lanes. Thousands of citizens bearing yellow ribbons and American flags lined Route 18 from Weymouth into Abington. Hundreds waited more than an hour in sub-freezing temperature at the Abington war memorial off Washington Street for a brief pause in the hearse’s progress at noon. They stood in silence while helicopters and police motorcycles nearly drowned the orders to the color guard.
Marine sergeant Daniel Vasellian, 27, was the 2,956th American military member killed in the Iraq/Afganistan wars when ambushed in Helmand Province, Afganistan, December 23. Visiting hours will be from 3 to 7 PM today at Quealy and Son Funeral Home on Adams Street in Abington. A funeral Mass will be said in Abington’s Saint Bridget Roman Catholic Church Thursday beginning at 9 AM.
